The Northern Pacific Tree Frog, also known as the The Northern Pacific Tree Frog, also known as the Pacific Chorus Frog or simply "the tree frog," is a small amphibian found in western North America. This frog species is widely distributed across its range, from Alaska to California and from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains. They are typically found in wetlands, ponds, and streams, and are known for their distinctive and recognizable croaking calls.

Northern Pacific Tree Frogs are small in size, growing to only about 1.5-2 inches in length. They have a green or brownish-green coloration with dark markings, and their skin is smooth and moist. These frogs have large toe pads that help them climb trees and other surfaces, earning them their name. They are active during the breeding season in early spring, and can be heard calling loudly from their breeding sites.

In addition to being a recognizable and important member of western ecosystems, the Northern Pacific Tree Frog also serves as an indicator species for environmental health. They are sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat degradation, and declines in their populations can signal larger issues within an ecosystem. As such, they are an important focus of conservation efforts in the northwest of North America.

Bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare) is a common weed fo Bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare) is a common weed found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. It is a biennial plant that grows up to six feet tall and produces prickly leaves and stems. Bull thistle blooms in mid-summer with purple or pink flowers that are attractive to pollinators like bees and butterflies. Despite its ornamental appearance, bull thistle is considered a noxious weed in many areas due to its invasive nature and ability to crowd out native vegetation.

Bull thistle is a hardy plant that can grow in a wide range of soil types and environmental conditions. It is commonly found in disturbed areas such as roadsides, fields, and pastures, but can also invade natural areas like forests and wetlands. Bull thistle reproduces through seeds, which can remain viable in the soil for several years. This plant can be difficult to control once established, as its deep taproot makes it resistant to most herbicides.

Although bull thistle is considered a weed, it does have some beneficial uses. The plant has a long history of use in traditional medicine as a treatment for a variety of ailments, including respiratory infections and digestive issues. The prickly leaves and stems of the plant have also been used to make a type of vegetarian rennet for cheese-making. Additionally, bull thistle is an important source of nectar for pollinators and provides habitat for a variety of insects and birds.

Yellow-bellied marmots, also known as rock chuck, Yellow-bellied marmots, also known as rock chuck, are medium-sized rodents that are found throughout the western United States and Canada. They typically inhabit rocky, mountainous regions and are commonly seen in alpine meadows, near ski resorts, and along hiking trails. They are well adapted to their habitat, with their thick fur coat and hibernation behavior allowing them to survive in harsh mountain environments.

These marmots are diurnal and are often seen basking in the sun on rocky outcroppings. They are social animals and live in large communities, with each marmot having a specific role in the group. Yellow-bellied marmots are herbivores, and their diet consists of a variety of plants, including grasses, sedges, and wildflowers. They are known for their ability to store food in their burrows, which they will consume during the winter months when food is scarce.

In addition to their ecological importance, yellow-bellied marmots are also culturally significant to many indigenous groups. Today, yellow-bellied marmots are a popular sight for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts and are often considered to be one of the more charismatic species of rodents. However, it's important to remember that these animals are wild and should be appreciated from a distance to ensure their safety and well-being.

North American river otters are semi-aquatic mamma North American river otters are semi-aquatic mammals that are commonly found in rivers, streams, lakes, and other aquatic habitats throughout North America. These otters are known for their sleek and agile bodies, webbed feet, and water-repellent fur that allows them to swim and dive with ease. They are also highly social animals that live in family groups, with an average group size of 2-8 individuals.

North American river otters have a varied diet that typically includes fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other aquatic invertebrates. They are also known to consume small mammals and birds on occasion. These otters are excellent hunters and are able to locate their prey underwater using their acute sense of smell, vision, and hearing. They are also known to use their dexterous paws to manipulate and open their prey, making them one of the most skilled predators in their aquatic habitats.

Despite their adaptability and hunting prowess, North American river otters have faced significant threats in the past, including habitat loss, pollution, and over-harvesting for their fur. However, with conservation efforts and habitat restoration programs, their populations have rebounded in recent years. Today, North American river otters are considered a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and serve as an important indicator species for the health of aquatic ecosystems.

Bitterroot, also known as Lewisia rediviva, is a s Bitterroot, also known as Lewisia rediviva, is a small flowering plant that is native to western North America. It is a hardy perennial that can grow up to 8 inches tall and has succulent leaves and stems. Bitterroot is most commonly found in arid regions, such as rocky slopes and prairies, and is well adapted to survive in harsh environments.

Bitterroot is known for its strikingly beautiful pink or white flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer. The flowers are approximately 2 inches in diameter and have numerous stamens, giving them a delicate and intricate appearance. The plant is also known for its historical and cultural significance, as it was an important food source for Indigenous communities, who used the roots as a staple food during the winter months.

Despite its hardiness and cultural significance, bitterroot has faced significant threats in recent years due to habitat loss and over-collection. In response, conservation efforts have been implemented to protect bitterroot populations and restore their natural habitats. Today, bitterroot remains an important symbol of resilience and adaptation, and its beauty and cultural significance continue to inspire and captivate people around the world.

Bitterroot is one of many types of flora and fauna featured in the latest Gold Country Geotour: The Prequel. Learn more about this beautiful flower and its history in the page for Bitterroot - The Prequel #18: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC9YKXR
