The American beaver, scientifically known as Castor canadensis, is a remarkable mammal native to North America. Recognized for its distinctive appearance and impressive engineering skills, the beaver plays a vital role in shaping ecosystems and is often referred to as a "keystone species." These semi-aquatic creatures are renowned for their ability to construct intricate dams and lodges, creating thriving habitats for themselves and numerous other species.Beavers are the largest rodents in North America, with adults reaching lengths of up to four feet and weighing around 40 to 60 pounds. They possess a stocky body with dense, waterproof fur that is primarily brown, aiding in their survival in aquatic environments. Beavers are well-equipped for their semi-aquatic lifestyle, featuring webbed hind feet for efficient swimming and broad, scaly tails that serve multiple purposes, including balance, communication, and as a tool for slapping the water to alert others of danger.Perhaps one of the most fascinating aspects of the American beaver is its ability to modify landscapes. Wiki's Way, Quicky, Tree Fort and Rudy's Loop Lower Trail is a trail that is harder to speak than to hike, being only moderate difficulty and 5.6 km in length. This 1.5 hour long trail brings you along a beautiful forest of conifers with plenty of shade for hot summer days, but this is also an excellent trail for snow-shoeing during the winter.
