Wolf lichen (Letharia vulpina) is a species of yellow-green lichen found in the Northern Hemisphere, primarily in high-altitude and boreal forests. It is a foliose lichen, meaning it grows in flat, leaf-like structures attached to the substrate. The lichen gets its common name from its toxic properties, which have been used to poison wolves and other carnivores in traditional hunting practices.Wolf lichen contains vulpinic acid, a toxic secondary metabolite that makes it unpalatable to herbivores and dangerous to carnivores. Despite its toxic nature, wolf lichen has a variety of ecological roles and is an important food source for several species of insects, particularly lichen moths. It also plays a role in nitrogen fixation, adding nitrogen to the ecosystem through its symbiotic relationship with cyanobacteria. In addition to its ecological importance, wolf lichen has a rich cultural history and has been used for a variety of purposes by indigenous peoples. In traditional medicine, it was used as a remedy for various ailments, and its yellow pigment was used as a dye. Wolf lichen has also been used as a tool for biological monitoring, as its sensitivity to air pollution makes it an indicator of environmental health. Overall, wolf lichen is a unique and fascinating species with a rich history and important ecological role.Follow us to learn more about the local wildlife of Gold Country!Photos by Sundry Photography and John Nakamata@village of ashcroft | @Love Clinton | @village of cache creek | @district of logan lake | @savona activities | @Lillooet British Columbia#WildlifeWednesday #ExploreBC #ExploreGoldCountryBC #Geocaching ...
