'Batty' For You
Apr 25th, 2006
Throughout Gold Country we observe the beauty and magnitude of Mother Nature and her creatures. The majestic rock-faced mountains, ponderosa pine forests, arid grassy rangelands and sagebrush covered desert – all home to one of her most fascinating, yet misunderstood creatures – the bat.
The District of Lillooet has encouraged a safe haven for these wonderful mammals, understanding the vital role they play in nature’s ecology. Interesting fact: Bats are integral to the pollination of cactus, and the spread of important plant seeds throughout the world. We can also thank several bat species for ‘dining on’ mosquitoes – a bonus, as we enjoy the B.C. outdoors.
Many bat species can be observed in the Lillooet region, including the Pallid Bat, which prefers to roost in Ponderosa Pine forests, and is found to hunt over areas of large sagebrush and open grassland. Look for the Yuma Myotis who also loves the Pine & Douglas Fir forests, nesting in caves and trees. You may also spot the Western Small-footed Myotis who roosts in small caves found in cliffs and rock outcrops. This species will winter over, as will several others, including the Silver-haired & Townsend’s Big-eared. And, let us not forget the region’s favorite mosquito-eater, the Little Brown Myotis.
While in the Lillooet area, visit the historic ‘Old Bridge’, Seton Lake, the Seton Creek Spawning Channels and trails throughout the area – all wonderful bat, bird and wildlife sighting areas.
Have we peaked your interest? Be sure to contact the Lillooet Naturalist Society for a complete Species Listing and sighting information. Visit our region and ‘meet a new friend in nature’.
