Ashcroft High School Rodeo
Apr 27th, 2006
High School Rodeos have been an integral part of the western experience for over 30 years. Since 2005, the community of Ashcroft armed with a solid group of dedicated volunteers, has joined the excitement of this experience.
‘High School Rodeo’ is about education, dedication, love of animals and the quest for success – and of course, having a great time. Participation is reserved for high school students who consistently maintain passing grades and display a conscientious attitude, with the local School Division offering moral support and encouragement. Scholarships are available, so achievement, honesty, determination and hard work are rewarded. Success at this level of rodeo competition often serves as the solid first step to a Pro Rodeo career.
Over 200 participants take part in the exciting contests scheduled for young women and young men. Participation in more than one event is encouraged, with prizes for ‘All Around High Score’. Young men’s’ events include: bareback riding, saddlebronc riding, bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and team roping. Young ladies events include: break away roping, poll bending, barrel racing, goat tying and joining the boys for team roping. Continuing tradition, there is also a Rodeo Queen contest.
Contenders for the Ashcroft event come from all areas of British Columbia; completing the Rodeo circuit of Chase, Barriere, Dawson Creek, Williams Lake, North Okanagan, Chilliwack, Chetwynd, Keremeos, Merritt and Kamloops. BC Finals are held annually in Kamloops, with the champions heading off to Nationals, as proud representatives of the youth of BC.
Pride, community and respect are always a great part of the Rodeo mission. In recognition of the community support, and to thank the many contestants and volunteers; the rodeo puts forth an appreciation dinner, which takes place immediately after the 1st performance on opening day. Admission to this great event is FREE, enticing the whole community to attend. Concession stands provide fuel for the fun, and wonderful desert weather provides the perfect excuse to walk away from chores and join in the excitement.
See you every April - for a rockin' good time !!
