ASHCROFT BIRDING TREATS
Nov 1st, 2006
Ashcroft and area is a great place for the 'birder' - both casual and avid !
Relax and enjoy the multitude of hummingbirds, such as the Rufous and Calliope. These entertaining birds frequent the many beautiful area gardens, some of which can be found at the local B&Bs. A special treat for everyone !
This region's low scrubland and ponderosa pine habitat is home to such interesting species as the Townsend Solitaire, Pileated Woodpecker, Pygmy Owl and the Hawk Owl. Lewis's Woodpecker sightings are quite possible; and be alert to spy the odd Lazuli Bunting - truly exciting !
As throughout the Thompson & Fraser River region, a regular treat is watching our Osprey families, as they fish up and down the rivers. Several nesting sites are easily accessed, and you will find the Osprey to be quite entertaining.
Count on a good variety of sparrows & finches (especially in winter). Enjoy the numerous species of ducks & shorebirds, including Barrow's Goldeneye and the Great Blue Heron, which can be sited locally and throughout Gold Country.
The Ashcroft area was added to the Christmas Bird Count for Bird Studies Canada in 2005. We welcome all birders to visit and explore what this unique intermontane area yields 'on the fly'.
