Ashcroft Manor
Apr 26th, 2006
An important piece of the district heritage is the ever-present Ashcroft Manor, situated on the Trans Canada Hwy, 10km south of Cache Creek. British noblemen and brothers Clement & Henry Cornwall first settled this site in 1862; the beauty of the region compelling them to abandon their ‘gold rush dreams’ to build a new life amid the expansive rolling ranchlands. The decision was made to build a new home, lovingly named ‘Ashcroft House’, after their family home in England. This new house also served as a shelter for weary travelers.
Late in 1862, the brothers decided that a larger house was needed to serve travelers, anticipating the new wagon road that would soon pass through their land. This new two storey road house opened in 1863, complete with Saloon. Let no man accuse the Cornwall brothers of being lazy. Influential members of Society and industrious business men, the brothers worked hard to build success with their ranch, roadhouse, saloon, market gardens, sawmill, blacksmithing, and eventually in 1865, a racetrack. Aided by the brothers’ enthusiasm for the sporting life, the Manor and Roadhouse soon became the social centre of the region.
This site serves wonderful memory to the saga of the Gold Rush/Cariboo history. The first manor house was destroyed by fire in 1943, but the Roadhouse survives as tribute to the glory days of Gold Country legend.
Now privately owned and operated, the Ashcroft Manor is a wonderful stopping spot on a sunny, summer day. Visit this significant historic site to enjoy a delicious meal at the Teahouse, browse the gift shop and tour the classic Manor building filled with significant memorabilia. Still present on the property are 6 original historic buildings – simply preserved as tribute to the memory of our proud pioneer spirit. Step back in time while you inhale the sweet lilac, or sit under the 19th century elm trees on the lush manor lawns. Open from May to October, this is a sure stop on your journey through this historic region.
