Government Cooperation Supports Gold Country Program
Sep 3rd, 2008
Gold Country President David Laird proudly announces an exciting new tourism initiative, the Gold Country Geotourism Program. “We are really looking forward to rolling out the Geotourism Program in the Gold Country area and appreciate the support of everyone contributing to this program. The increase in tourism this program will bring to the Gold Country region will be a positive impact to our rural communities.”
What is Geotourism? Discover our region’s rich historical past with a modern day treasure hunt! Use GPS coordinates or a compass and clues to seek out an elusive box hidden at each site. Visit several locations and earn prizes. Those interested in culture, nature and history can spend an enjoyable afternoon exploring a site. Those passionate about finding geocaches can spend a few hours searching for an elusive box at each location. And those intrigued by both experiences will have fun in dual pursuits. A FREE activity that provides FUN for all ages!
Gold Country Business Manager, Heidi Roy and Marketing Coordinator Amy Thacker have put significant hours into the development of this initiative. “It is an amazing feeling to be working cooperatively with so many levels of government, each focused on improving tourism and economic development in our rural Gold Country communities” says Thacker. “The potential of this program is phenomenal.”
Western Economic Diversification Canada, the Northern Development Initiative Trust, the Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition and Gold Country members have all contributed to Phase one of the Geotourism program beginning this fall. Northern Development Initiative Trust Director Mayor Ella Brown, District of Logan Lake stated "This project is a cornerstone for the southern communities working together to diversify their economies by creating new tourism related initiatives. $81,070 in grant funding for this project is through the Northern Development's Pine Beetle Recovery Program. That program is an initiative of the Province of BC which invested $30 million in the Trust to focus on projects that support economic diversification and create new jobs in communities affected by the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic, encourages regional collaboration, and establishes enduring relationships between business, First Nations, local government and the broader community."
After months of planning the Gold Country Geotourism Program begins in earnest this September. Watch for exciting new developments in each Gold Country community. “It is going to be a busy winter season for the Gold Country region,” says Thacker with enthusiasm.
