THERE’S ‘GOLD’ IN GOLD COUNTRY
Oct 5th, 2007 Gold Country presents an exciting new Geotourism program, offering infinite opportunities to our region, by combining two of the world’s hottest trends; the developing interest in exploring and experiencing historic and natural history sites and the explosive growth of site location activities, such as geocaching. Geocaching is the modern treasure hunt; people hide containers and post Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates online for others to find their ‘cache’. The combination of a historical or cultural site with a geocache raises the interest of the site, thus increasing visits. During the September board meeting, the Gold Country board of directors unanimously approved the proposed Geotourism Program in principal for further development. Since this approval the office has been busy creating funding applications, business plans and proposed implementation formats. The interest for this concept is exploding, with information coming forward regarding similar concepts with other communities and non-profit groups. Partnerships to move the Gold Country Program forward have been progressing nicely. This program offers Gold Country the opportunity to capitalize on leading world trends and create economic growth.
