Located where the Thompson and Fraser rivers meet, Lytton started as a service supply centre during the gold rush. The native name is Kumsheen or "meeting place" and it has long been a place for the aboriginal people to meet, trade and celebrate.
The construction of Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1885 and Canadian National Railway (CNR) in 1913 brought numerous workers to area. Many of these workers were Chinese and they saw value in the jade that was abundant in the area. The completion of the road through the Fraser Canyon in 1922 brought motor traffic, which increased when the Trans Canada Highway as it exists now was complete in 1964.
Lytton is the rafting capital of Canada, and for good reason. In the colourful canyons between Lytton and Spences Bridge there are 18 major rapids within 40Km. Several companies offer guided rafting adventures on paddle or power rafts. For the more modest adventurers, take a hike through the Stein Valley and enjoy the flowers and wildlife.
Don't forget to tour the museum and see the collection of over 1,300 photos illustrating the history of the area. There are also displays featuring the early tools used, original gold scales from the general store and a 140 year old Chinese tapestry. Open annually from June to September.
Stop by the Visitor Info Centre for brochures, directions or suggestions on what to see and do in the area. You can also pick up historical walking tour pamphlets to guide you through the historical buildings in town.
Caboose Park, near the Info Centre, houses railway memorabilia and photos as well as a model railway layout of rail lines from Siska to Lytton. A must see for railway enthusiasts!
Also of interest is the Lytton Jelly roll, a large sand and silt structure mounted on the wall facing the park. The original, a rolled layer of silt encased in coarser sands and gravel was uncovered in a gravel pit south of Lytton. Formed in the last glaciation 11,000 to 25,000 years ago, this specimen is rare because of its size. Usually measured in centimetres, this one measures in meters and is one of the largest, if not the largest, formation of this type in the world!
