Bring your camera and a picnic lunch and come and discover historic Brookmere. Travel south of Merritt, take the Coldwater Road exit off Hwy 5 about 30 kms, and follow the signs.
The community of Brookmere was once a stopping point for the Kettle Valley Railway. This was the central point between Princeton and Merritt, where the engines had to be rewatered and prepared for the rest of their journey. The town never became a major community due to the weather conditions they had to encounter.
As you drive up to Brookmere, the Coldwater River flows along beside you; perfect for a cool dip on those hot sunny days. You can usually find a great swimming spot. There are trestles along the way that are left from the railway, and are now used by hikers and bikers. As you climb up the steep mountain to Brookmere, the view of the valley is gorgeous. Not much remains of the community, but evidence of its railway history can be found by the caboose, the foundation of the railway roundhouse and a large fuel storage tank that remain at the site. You can also see the last standing water tank, which was moved from its original foundation to save it from being torn down. There is a park located in the centre of Brookmere, with picnic tables - an ideal spot for a picnic lunch.
Today, Brookmere is a place for recreational activities- hiking, biking and snowmobiling. There are numerous trails throughout the area. There are no amenities in Brookmere; so make sure you have all that you need before heading up to the community.
