Construction of the Cariboo Wagon Road in the 1860s resulted in a number of new towns springing up throughout the southern Cariboo. One of many towns established along this historic route and one of the first stopping places along, the town of 70 Mile House began as a mere roadhouse. Many towns along the Cariboo Highway are helpfully referred to by the distance north along the Gold Rush Trail from Lillooet (Mile 0). Thus 70 Mile House marks the 70-mile distance between Lillooet and this town, this of course notes the mileage on the old route not on the current highway.
During the summer around 70 Mile House, visitors can enjoy all the outdoor activities that have become synonymous with the beautiful wilderness of British Columbia: camping, horseback riding, mountain biking or hiking; swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, as well as some outstanding fishing. During the winter months try sleigh rides, snowmobiling, dog sledding, tobogganing, ice fishing and cross country skiing.
Today, 70 Mile House still has a general store and gas station, post office, pub, motel, restaurants, tire shop and other services catering to residents and travelers following this historic route.
70 Mile House marks the turnoff point to the Green Lake Recreational Area. Fifteen-kilometre long Green Lake was situated on the Fur Brigade Trail between Fort Kamloops and Fort Alexandria. Now along with Watch Lake, it is a popular recreational area and home to a thriving wildlife population that includes osprey, eagles, loons and a variety of ducks.
If you love to play in the water, then this is an area worth visiting. There are some 18 public access points to Green Lake for swimmers, boaters, windsurfers and water-skiers. A general store and gas bar, along with restaurants and accommodations are available throughout the 70 Mile area. So if you're looking for an all-season outdoor recreation get-away, visit the 70 Mile House and Green Lake area of Gold Country ¡V great outdoor opportunities and friendly people promise a wonderful time!
